How to Store Your Cakes for Long Keeping Its Freshness Intact?

After you bring the cake from a cake shop, it remains fresh for a day or two. Later, the cake might lose its taste and freshness. However, storing the cake correctly can help you enjoy the cake for a longer period. Take the tips from the experts for cake storage. Cakes can be kept fresh if they are stored properly keeping in mind a few factors. You can store them in your fridge or in the kitchen cupboard as per below points.

Tips to Store the Cake Rightly
  • Note the Sponges of Your Cake: It is always advisable to have a cake with sponges covered fully with frosting. If the sponge is kept exposed then it is likely to get dried up while storing.
  • Refrigeration of Your Cake: Cakes made of buttercream lasts for 3-4 days when kept in the refrigerator. Cakes made of cream cheese frosting must be refrigerated for at least 2 days and then allowed to come to room temperature before serving. Cakes having food colour or sugar paste must not be refrigerated. If cakes have icing and marzipan on them then they last for a longer time period.
  • Wrapping of Cakes: Cupcakes and sponges must be wrapped up in a cling film. This prevents the cake from drying out by creating a protective barrier. It is ideal is to cover a buttercream topped cake tin with greaseproof paper if kept at room temperature.
  • Freezing of Cakes: Cakes freeze well up to a period of 4 months. Wrap up the sponges separately and put the frosting in an airtight container before they are frozen. In case the cake is already frosted then it has to be wrapped up in a cling film and then kept in an airtight container. This will prevent the cake from absorbing any flavour from the freezer.
  • Sunlight: Cakes must be kept away from direct sunlight as this can melt the frosting and even result in discoloration of the icing.
  • Temperature: Cakes must be kept in a cool place or at room temperature. During the summer season, it is better to refrigerate the cake and then bring it to room temperature before serving.
  • Soggy Bottoms: The spongy cakes tend to become soggy either due to humidity or when warm cakes cool down. It is better is allow the cakes to cool down completely on a wire cooling rack before frosting them.
  • Defrosting Of Cakes: You must allow your cakes to defrost completely after taking them out of the freezer and then serve them. The sponges can be levelled using a serrated knife after defrosting is done fully.
